Normal coffee is grown on plantations where diverse rainforest used to grow. An SMBC certification means the coffee is 100% organic and shade-grown under conditions that are ecologically sustainable for migratory birds and their habitat. They require a variety of native trees and vegetation around the plantation. With this diversity, each plantation provides habitat for many migrating songbirds and provides the farmers with highly productive farms and a better tasting bean. For more information regarding bird-friendly coffee visit the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center website.
